Golf, Hypnosis and Suggestion

Golf, there is probably no single sport that depends more on the mind. Imagine a golfer being at the tee with his pin striped shirt ready to tee off.  He has his driver out and takes a couple of practice swings.  What is the golfer saying to himself before teeing off?  What suggestions is he giving himself for his mind/body to respond to?  What ability is he characterizing himself to have?   When teeing off, does the golfer say, “ I always hit the fairway,” or does the golfer say” I never hit the fairway.”  Does the player give himself a positive command or a negative command?

There are numerous examples of how hypnosis can and is used within sports.  When a golfer is hitting an approach shot towards the green, hypnotic self talk can be used to create a better shot.  How many times does a person say before hitting the shot,  “I always put it in the trap?”  The golfer is focusing on the trap, thus his next shot will be in the trap for his focus was on the trap.   His focus and self talk to himself was not as follows: “On this next shot, I am going to put it on the green.”   If your self-talk is creating the adventure of being in the sand, then you will simply end up in the sand.  The hypnotic self talk should be based on where the golfer would like to hit  the ball and not based on what the golfer would like to avoid.  The focus becomes the positive verbal commands and not where someone should avoid.

The Travel Bag

One of the most effective and funniest uses of public hypnosis is with expensive travel bags.  As a public speaker, traveling through airports, I sometimes see men or women carrying a travel bag by one the high end designers.   Many of these bags may cost $400 to $600 dollars.  Here is the hilarious catch:   They do not have wheels on them.   You see the person trudging along carrying this heavy bag sometimes weighing 45 or 50 pounds, and it doesn’t even have wheels on it.   Truly seasoned travelers carry the bag that has wheels and probably costs a fraction of the price.  This is a great illustration that you can convince someone of anything.  You can convince someone that the luggage is really worth this exorbitant amount of money.

Questions to ask yourself:

~~Have we ever been hypnotized be media???
~~Do we believe that a diamond really buys happiness?
~~Have you ever paid $100 for a pair of jeans?
~~How about the $65.00 rough cotton Polo T shirt. Is it really worth $65.00 or have you been convinced or shall we say hypnotized into believing that it is worth $65.00? Is the fact that there is a tiny horse on the shirt makes it worth so much? How much better is it than the shirt that is 1/5hypnosis-arm-out the price and made out of higher quality of cotton?

Can a person stay in a hypnotic state and not wake from it?

Everyone wakes up out of hypnosis. A person who is hypnotized CANNOT stay in a hypnotic state unless they are constantly hearing the hypnotist’s voice. This is the most frequently asked question from audience members after a show. Some people have a true fear in hypnosis that a person can stay in the hypnotic state and not wake up from it. Sometimes a person can be deep enough that they might require a slight tap on the shoulder or an extra count up from the hypnotist, but everyone wakes up out of hypnosis. It is very similar to asking, has anyone ever not woken up from a nap? The only way someone doesn’t wake up from a nap and get stuck within a nap is if they died or other coma related issues that would have nothing to do with hypnosis to begin with. Everyone always simply wakes up out of hypnosis.

Driving–You are often Hypnotized!

Have you ever driven past your house when your intention was to go to your house? Driving is one of the most hypnotic things that we can do. We can go on a long road trip and suddenly hours go by without remembering the route that we took. We can pass numerous towns, lakes and pastures while not remembering a good deal of the route. Driving creates the sleeplike hypnotic state where you have the

focused state of the road or the painted white lines twenty or thirty feet in front of you. We often react subconsciously to these situations on the road without consciously thinking about the tasks of driving at hand. When we first learn to drive as a teenager, we are creating a much more conscious state with both hands on the wheel and attempting to notice everything around us. After years of driving, we create a more nap like state while on the road or shall we we say being in a more subconscious state. Some incredibly hypnotic situations can arise by anyone who has driven through snow, especially on a dark evening. The snowflakes falling with the white lines going by create a very repetitious and hypnotic state for the driver. It is a very similar effect to the use of a flashing light that hypnotists will often use in order to help hypnotize someone during the induction in the beginning of the show in order to get them into a hypnotic state.

The Power of Suggestion

The power of suggestion is illustrated in numerous areas of our lives.  An excellent illustration of this is what is known as the arm levitation technique.  Now, place both of your hands out in front of you. Yes, place both arms out in front of you.  Now, flip your right hand over, now imagine there is a large set of books in your right hand. As you feel the large set of books in your right hand, imagine your left hand becoming very light. You feel the lightness of your left hand as if there is a balloon in your left hand pulling it up to the ceiling.   As you feel your left hand get lighter and lighter, you imagine it pulling up to the ceiling.   Now feel the heaviness of the right hand pulling down towards the ground as another set of books is being placed on your right hand.  Feel how heavy the right hand is becoming even heavier.  Now, Freeze your hands.  Look at where your hands are:

This is an illustration of the power of suggestion.  The hypnotist gives the commands and describes the story and your body follows.  You feel as if there is a large set of books in your right hand even though your hand is completely empty.  This is a great illustration of the Power of Suggestion!
